Although not originally included in the academic calendar for 2021, Health Day was added back to the academic calendar following a series of suicides on campus.
UNC psychology professor Adam Miller, who studies risk factors for youth and young adults' suicide and self-harm behavior, said the youth mental health crisis developed long before the emergence of COVID-19, but the pandemic "shines it" into the spotlight. 'Difficulties faced by young people.

"I think (COVID-19) is a huge stressor that has compounded pre-existing issues for young people," Miller said.

UNC Psychology Department Chair Samantha Meltzer-Browdy said the mental health crisis is affecting teenagers and adults, including UNC students.

"There's no question there's a mental health crisis in youth, it's documented in the Surgeon General's report, the CDC report, other national and international reports, and it affects all young people," Meltzer-Browdy said.
Jonathan Abramowitz, director of clinical training in the psychology department, added that the increase in reports of mental health problems can also be explained by other factors.

"I think there is a debate about whether the increase in mental health problems is increasing compared to maybe we are more aware of it, we are more sensitive to it, and another possibility is that we have lowered the threshold for people with normal everyday names. Stress and anxiety – it is pathologized," he said.
Although most restrictions related to COVID-19 have been lifted, students continue to face mental health challenges, and wellness days can have a very positive impact, Meltzer-Browdy said.

Abramowitz said it is difficult to measure the impact of health days on students' mental health because it is difficult to define terms such as anxiety and stress and measure their levels.

Miller noted that wellness days are a good start, but not enough to address student mental health issues.

"I think there's probably a collective understanding, both among students and faculty and administration, that one day is not necessarily enough to take care of your mental health completely," he said.
Abramowitz said one important thing universities can do to support students' mental health is to promote education and awareness.

Meltzer-Browdy added that Health Day makes an impact by publicly recognizing that people need to spend time on self-care and health, and by encouraging people to participate in activities that improve well-being.
