Ut Summer 2023 Calendar – We can do this by shortening winter or spring vacations, or by having an extra week or two in June. The proposed calendars with these options were overwhelmingly rejected by the public.

In the past, many clients have requested a consecutive week that includes April 1st for spring break, so they can plan an extended vacation. Sometimes Easter is in mid-March, sometimes in mid-April.

Most of our breaks are in the first semester, so we don't extend it. Now we can do away with the fall break because there is no UEA Convention, but the Calendar Committee representatives felt strongly that students, the community and faculty wanted a break.

Why do we start at the beginning of August, take a few weeks off for the whole year, and not move into June? Why do we start later in the school year, end earlier, shorten or eliminate recess? Why don't we go from September to mid-June?

We get a lot of questions about having competing apps. Over the past few years, customers have wanted up to one week of spring vacation and up to two weeks of winter vacation. The committee begins by determining when and how long these two breaks will last, then works backwards to meet the demands of the school day. Many people prefer to start school in the second week of August because that's when high school activities across the state begin and there are more days of school before Advanced Placement tests. Many people like to start in September, when it's cooler, and spend a few weeks until June. The committee weighs these competing interests and makes recommendations.
