February 2023 Calendar Black History Month – Celebrated each February, Black History Month gives Americans an opportunity to learn about the details of our nation's history that, unfortunately, are often overlooked or pushed aside. Like a black story

American history is a varied and rich history. Smart people respect their past and learn from it. It refuses to allow the most important facts of our shared and collective memory to disappear into the depths of forgotten history. The past shapes and informs where we will end up in the future, and dedicating a month to learning as much as possible about black history is absolutely essential.

February 2023 Calendar Black History Month

Black History Month would not have been possible in the United States in 1926 without Negro History Week. Noted historian Carter G. Woodson and the Society for the Study of Negro Life and History have designated the second week of February as Negro History Week. Since the event's inception, the focus has been on encouraging the teaching of black American history in educational institutions, especially elementary schools. The Delaware, North Carolina and West Virginia departments of education have been very cooperative. The public reception was lukewarm, but Woodson considered it a success and "one of the happiest moves the union has ever made."

In February 1969, the idea of ​​Black History Month was promoted by black students and faculty at Kent State University, and a year later the first Black History Month celebration was held on campus and on site. Six years on, Black History Month is celebrated not only in schools, colleges and community centers, but across the country. In 1976, President Gerald Ford celebrated Black History Month and called on all citizens to "seize the opportunity to honor the much-neglected achievements of black Americans in all our historical endeavors."

Education is the main theme of this holiday, and education for black students is a major movement in the country. One way many organizations do this is through scholarships. For students looking for funding, Schoolroo has a database of scholarships for black students. The establishment of Black History Month was also controversial. Celebrating black history for a month felt too restrictive and many felt it was inappropriate. Another concern was the idea that Black History Month would deal with a sensitive topic and lead to an oversimplification of black history figures as heroes.

The first Black History Month celebration, offered by black faculty and students at Kent State University, is taking place a year later.

Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for equal rights for blacks in the 1950s and 1960s; Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American justice appointed to the US Supreme Court in 1967; Mae Jamison, who became the first African-American astronaut in space in 1992; Barack Obama, the first African-American President of the United States.

The celebration of Black History Month began in 1915 when Carter G. Woodson, known as the "Father of Black History," founded the Society for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1926, Woodson started the first Negro History Week in February.
