University Of Maryland Calendar 2023 23 – The Worcester County Board of Education voted unanimously this week to approve the dates for next school year. The approved calendar begins on September 5th and sets the last day of school on June 12th.
"When you look at the schedule, you'll see that it very much reflects the structure we've had in the past with a start date of September 5, for a week long winter break, now starting with a half day on Thursday. , December 21, now with spring break starting Wednesday, March 27, with a half day and then Thursday, closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday," said Carrie Sterrs, director of public relations and special programs for the school system. . . Strrs told the school board this week that three potential calendar proposals were shared with the community in November. A survey was conducted from November 16 to December 21 to collect participants.

He said the survey received 1,502 responses, which is 378 more than last year, and was completed mainly by parents and employees.
"Student participation is over 9% who identify as students," said Sters. "Student participation has doubled in just two years."
He said most subgroups of respondents preferred the school system's proposed third calendar, which was a flat calendar, rather than an early release option or a longer separation option. Strrs said the supervisors' proposal received 805 votes, or 53.6 percent. As a result, the supervisor said he recommended the board approve a modified version of that proposal.

"The biggest change from the original proposal was how we approach half a day of professional learning," Sterrs said. "Our survey data showed that our families want it to be non-random and for our purpose, moving away from Friday will help mitigate some of the attendance declines we've seen."
To accommodate this, the schedule was changed to early release vocational training days scheduled on the second Wednesday of the month.
"You see it doesn't happen every month and that's by design," Sters said. "Obviously we're back in September, so we're not going to do it in September. December and June are shorter to get in. It also provides a smooth ride for these loose days ."

Annette Wallace, the school system's chief of safety and 12th grade academics, thanked Sters for the change, which she said will pay off as teachers continue to demand more opportunities for quality professional development.
