This year Christmas falls on a Sunday. I have noticed in the past that when Christmas falls on a Sunday, some congregations choose not to gather for worship. We understand! You've just finished a Christmas service (or several services) and like everyone else, you want to spend time with your family. Let's be honest, you're sick of Christmas Eve! But we think it's important to pray on Christmas Sunday, and here are some reasons why you should consider doing so.

The Christmas service gives single people an opportunity to connect with the faith community.

Christmas worship gives voice to the meaning of Christmas beyond the consumerism and commercialization of Christmas. Christmas is not about stuffed stockings and bow-wrapped packages under the tree, but about the true gift of Jesus bursting into our broken and troubled world, bringing peace, hope, love and joy. Those who gather to worship at Christmas keep the Sabbath and celebrate our Savior's birthday. Without Christmas, without the birth of Jesus, the church would not be a church. Gathering for Christmas worship, virtually or in person, provides a spiritual foundation to go along with all the other traditions and customs of the day.

At best, many people are single at Christmas. The family lives far away or has lost contact with the family. Add to that a global pandemic where many have lost family members, and Christmas can feel really lonely. While many in your congregation have family and friends to celebrate Christmas with, this may not be the case for everyone. The Christmas service gives single people an opportunity to connect with the faith community.

To further address the need for communication, consider dining out if you are meeting in person. It may be one of the famous churches. The idea is to give those who are single that day an opportunity to spend time in Christianity. No one wants to feel alone or forgotten, and the church can be at the forefront of helping others make meaningful connections.

Christmas worship is an opportunity to try something new, to pray outside the box, to experience Christ in new ways. The hybrid service allows leisure travelers to join the celebration virtually. Instead of following your congregation's usual Christmas service routine, consider one or more of the following worship opportunities:
