Uga Calendar Spring 2023 – The sudden transition to online classes at the University of Georgia has not slowed students' progress toward a degree. Spring 2020 data shows that grade point averages and dropout rates are comparable to previous years. Preliminary data also shows a summer enrollment record.
The average grade point average for UGA students was 3.76 in spring 2020, compared to 3.63 in spring 2019. The average graduation rate was 2.6% in 2019 and 2.5% in 2020 .

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University System of Georgia announced March 16 that its 26 institutions will transition to online classes at the end of the semester. Faculty quickly moved their courses online, and many campus units supported their efforts behind the scenes.
The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Online Learning (OOL), for example, have facilitated one-on-one consultations and large meetings for groups of teachers via Zoom. Business information technology services and university libraries have adjusted their hours to extend technical support.
While UGA professors were learning new ways to deliver their classes, they were also finding new ways to interact with students.

Margaret Crist, an associate professor of accounting in the Terry College of Business, has turned her original class meeting times into office hours where students can come to live video chat. She said the sessions were part teaching and part counseling.
Marian Gallagher, a professor in the School of Public and International Affairs, shared her cell phone number and told students she could call anytime if there were problems with class, work, family or anything else in life. They surveyed students asking them what worries them most about online learning.
"For some students, it's their first time taking an online course and they're doing four or five at a time," he said. "Everybody has different preferences for what system they want to use and how they're going to do it."

Because of these broader needs, Gallagher recorded his lectures and posted the course materials online for students to access at their leisure.
Josiah Meigs, teaching professor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, decided to teach live.
"One of the things students enjoy is that it's fluid," she said. "Students ask great questions in the chat and we can take advantage of that. I like to relax a little bit and have fun. I use a GoPro or turn my computer camera around to show them that I'm doing a demo on my kitchen table. It's not a quality video NBC, but I think it creates a sense of camaraderie when students and faculty get a glimpse into each other's lives.

President Jere W. Morehead reflected on the resilience and perseverance of the UGA community. "I am proud of our dedicated faculty and resilient students during the Covid-19 pandemic," he said. "This high level of academic achievement will make all UGA graduates and supporters very proud."
Students and faculty certainly miss the personal interactions and palpable energy of a campus that brings together 39,000 students from Georgia and around the world. The pandemic has also created many other challenges, from health and financial concerns to access to technology, space or other widely available resources on campus. However, despite the obstacles, the students made it.
Logan Hutcheson, a biology and computer science double major, said that while it took a while to get motivated to take classes from home, he ultimately benefited from the transition. "One of my professors was great and always available on Zoom to help," she said. "I probably would have gotten a C in the class, but I would have gotten a B because of the extra support."

Initially, Logan planned to come to California this summer to fulfill his experiential learning requirements by interning at technology company Cisco. Fortunately, Cisco moved all internships to remote and Logan started his internship last month. "They gave me a project that was really impressive," he said.
The lack of reliable Internet access is a problem for many students, especially those in rural areas, and the university's Department of Academic Advancement responded by distributing wireless hotspots to more than 70 student homes.
Jaquarius K., a student from Upson County. Raglin finished her spring semester homework and helped her sixth-grade sister with math homework and practice to become a new student guidance leader. "I especially like to see teachers in their homes during video conferences, lectures or office hours," he said. "It made them more real and more accessible."

Increased access to asynchronous courses allowed Raglin to enroll in three classes over the summer while working hands-on with incoming students as an orientation leader.
While final summer enrollment numbers won't be available until July, preliminary data show this year's enrollment is up 3% from last year and has already topped 18,500 students, a new record, said Rahul Srivastav, vice president of instruction He added that online tutoring is critical to keeping students on track for a degree if they are interrupted by study abroad or internship plans.
"Student satisfaction with online classes in the spring led to online enrollment in the summer," Srivastav said. "It wasn't easy for anyone, but it was grateful."
