As if planning the 2023 Disney calendar wasn't hard enough, things have gotten a lot more difficult over the past few years, especially with the closing of Disney World's parks and returning attractions, entertainment venues, and restaurants. It took more than two years for them to return.
To predict what will happen in 2023, we need to take a close look at what has happened so far since the start of the reopening phase.
As congestion levels have been increasing since the parks reopened, we look at how they are expected to increase further in 2023 and how this will affect congestion and wait times.
The Basics: Using The Crowd Calendar To Decide When To Visit Disney World
Mind you, since the parks reopened, all traditional Disney World crowd calendars have been thrown out the window since attendance has been so difficult to predict with certainty.
Some of our predictions for 2022 turned out to be true (visitors returned to Walt Disney World in large numbers), but due to many unforeseen factors, we were also wrong. Any estimate for 2023 should be taken with a grain of salt, as understanding this population has been more difficult than ever in the past few years, and we are far from perfect.
2022 was an interesting year to say the least, and we didn't know how audiences would react throughout the year. There were many unknown factors such as the current health crisis, the economy and the willingness of guests to travel in general. As the year went on, it became clear that people weren't slowing down when they were on vacation or visiting the "most magical place on earth."
April 2023 Disneyland Crowd Calendar
Walt Disney World is essentially done with its phased reopening, starting in 2020 with Disney's Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. We've never had an official word from Disney or anyone else, but most known security restrictions have been in place for a long time. It has been around since it disappeared from the Disney World website.
However, things are still not fully back to normal, and the parks are currently limited in capacity due to labor shortages in the Orlando area.
Last year, the crowd was usually extremely high and you could not tell the peace in the attendance. Almost every time we went, the crowd seemed normal. It was very different from 2021 and especially 2020 when theme parks were ghost towns at times and many attractions were no more than a 15-20 minute ride away.

In 2022, it all started in January, when the parks were busier than we were used to. This is compounded by an even greater increase in congestion in February, with waits reaching levels unheard of for this time of year.
Things pick up in March and April when people travel more for spring break and Easter. The parks were incredibly crowded during these months, and even with the reduced capacity, the parks felt full.
May was quiet and probably our favorite month last year with very short wait times which made us very happy guests. Things picked up again in June and continued into July where Disney World seemed to have normal crowds again. Much of this has to do with the increase in theme park capacity and the new entertainment options available in the parks.

If you really want to look at the numbers, our friends at Thrill-data.com have some amazing charts where you can see the steady increase in wait times over the year.
The chart above shows Magic Kingdom wait times between November 2021 and November 2022. This article was updated before December 2022, but park ticket bookings and hotel bookings confirm it's going to be another crazy holiday season.
You can see that the average wait for this attraction in August/September 2021 was about 15 minutes, but when it rolled around in 2022, the average wait was 35 minutes or more.
Is Disneyland Busy In January? Best Days To Visit (2023)
There was a slight decrease in August, and in September, as every year, it increased. In fact, in September the average wait time at all 4 parks was between 25 and 40 minutes, a big difference from a few months ago.
October was one of the busiest months of the year, as it has been for years.
The congestion continued through the holiday season into November, although it wasn't fully visible on the chart because the month hadn't ended when I took these screenshots. We have no doubt that December will be the same and the parks will be full as usual. It is no coincidence that both months were nearing the peak of our busiest months.

So does this mean the population will continue to grow in 2023 and beyond? Yes, we think there's a good chance of that.
From September to December, in the spring and summer, the crowd always increases due to school holidays and programs. However, last year's increase is mostly due to people getting back to normal, with most people traveling on holiday and parks at almost 100% capacity.
The low level a few years ago was caused by several factors. Many domestic travelers were hesitant to take the trip at first, but after a few months decided to become more comfortable with the idea after seeing how Disney handled the changes and procedures. Removing these practices, such as wearing a face mask, would likely promote earlier guests willing to wait.

Additionally, many DVC members had to use their points on canceled trips in 2020 and 2021 and went to Disney World last year to keep their points.
Disney has significantly increased attendance at the parks, and while Disney no longer says this publicly, it has to be 90% or higher because we can't tell it from a year ago. It was 2020 to find out.
Yes, guests still have to use Disney's new Park Pass system to reserve parks, and there are a limited number available each day, but even that isn't a problem unless you wait until the last minute or try to leave.
