Thoreau College strives to foster a harmonious balance of activities by engaging your mind, heart and hands in all programs at all times. In practice, this means combining open discussion of ideas and perspectives with artistic and practical practice in all courses. A typical day at Thoreau begins with a morning gathering of students and staff that includes readings, sports activities, and announcements. The rest of the morning is dedicated to classroom activities on academic topics or arts and crafts skills workshops. After the lunch break, the afternoon is devoted to work in the greenhouse, garden, farm or social partners. Friday lunchtime meetings are held to discuss and decide on important general management issues. Evenings and weekends are generally not scheduled, but students will have the opportunity to take elective courses offered by the Driftless Folk School and Thoreau College Community Seminar.

Expeditions and solos are sometimes held during the semester, with a half-term break in early April. As part of the program, we will commemorate and celebrate the changing seasons, the cycle of the sun, moon and stars, as well as holidays of various cultures and traditions.

The term kicks off in late January with a week-long hiking and camping adventure in the Kickapoo Valley. This immersive mid-winter experience is designed to set the tone for personal challenges and team building, and set a benchmark for observing the natural world for the upcoming change of seasons. At the beginning of March, students will have the opportunity to spend up to a week in one of several local houses, thinking, writing, reading and setting goals for the coming months. Finally, in early May, when spring is in full swing, students will take part in a second group outing.
In the first trimester of the semester, students will take part in three modules exploring stories, images and ideas about ecology, agriculture and more, as well as the relationship between humans and the natural world. Combining art, literature, spirituality, philosophy and practical skills, the modules will be taught by different teachers and use different methodologies to explore a set of related topics and questions. Scientific sessions are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30.
