Officials are proposing two options for next year, with family votes playing a role in the district's final decision.

Both calendars would begin before Labor Day, including 176 days of classes and no classes for the entire week of Thanksgiving — a departure from the usual three-day holiday week. Winter and spring vacation would cover the same periods in both: from December 26 to January. 6 and 3-7. April.

One of the schedules would largely mirror this year's, with classes starting on August 29 and ending on June 14, with the first semester ending in January after winter break.

Parents are asked to vote on two calendar options for 2022-2023, including option 1, which is similar to the current schedule.

The second option has more important changes and would start and end a week earlier, from August 22 to June 7. The first semester would be completed before the winter break, even if that would mean that the days and weeks would be less evenly distributed over the four quarters of the academic year. This calendar would be more in line with the calendars of suburban districts and local colleges and universities.

"The new academic calendar will set the tone for the 2022-23 school year, so it's important that our families play an active role in shaping it," CPS Executive Director Pedro Martinez wrote in an email to families Thursday.

"These options are intended to start the year earlier, consolidate reporting, and continue to offer important professional development and collaborative time for our faculty and staff. We look forward to hearing from our families about these two calendar options."

Officials said about 200 principals participated in surveys and focus groups to form the two options.

CPS saw lower-than-usual first-day attendance when it tried to start before Labor Day this year — 91.2% showed up, compared to an average of 94.3% from 2016 to 2019 — though that was also likely related to the pandemic. The last time classes started before the holidays was in the academic year 2013/14. year, approximately 93.5% started school on the first day.

Families have long appreciated the opportunity to wrap up summer and vacation plans before returning from the long Labor Day weekend, but the school year ended later in June. Classes only ended on June 22 last school year, the latest possible because Labor Day fell on September 7.

Some parents and teachers complained that the later start of CPS also meant less time to prepare for standardized tests, admissions tests like the ACT and SAT, and Advanced Placement tests.

CPS may be late to the trend, but it follows at least two dozen districts in Cook County – with dozens more in DuPage, Kane, Lake and Will – that have begun to get their children back into the classroom by mid-August in the past years.

In 2004, only 16 of about 1,000 school districts in the state had teachers or students on Aug. 14, according to records kept by the Illinois State Board of Education. By 2019, more than half of the state's 910 districts had returned teachers or had started classes by that date.
