Tiffin University Academic Calendar 2023 – With a passion for the past and a need to share history for the future, the university's public history program reaches beyond the walls of the history classroom. Public history focuses on understanding historical events and the best ways to communicate history to the public. Our courses focus on research, criticism and a variety of communication media – through the written word, filmmaking and design – so that future generations can understand, appreciate and learn from our historical past.
B.A. And public history is an applied history program. As a graduate of our program, you can occupy a variety of professional positions. B.A. The Public History program has a practical program where you can actively participate in the study of public history. In all general history courses, you will use photography and video design skills to present historical events. In these classes, you will collaborate on projects to create new and innovative ways to communicate history to people in the community.
You'll have access to TU's Digital Media Lab, where you'll use the latest technologies to support your digital history projects. In the lab, you'll work with cutting-edge software for digital archiving and digital storytelling.
You will participate in original historical research by evaluating and analyzing original documents and conducting interviews. As historical events unfold, professors engage students in topical and original research, such as a recent oral history project that focuses on societal responses to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Historical Research and Writing (HIS122) – This class is designed to develop general research and communication skills for the history profession. Each student completes a variety of research projects using primary and secondary materials, scholarly journals, oral histories, artifacts, and photographs. Advantages and disadvantages of online research are presented. Students will also learn how to work effectively in groups to prepare and present an oral presentation of their collaborative research. This is an intensive writing course.
Communication Across Cultures (COM324) – An introduction to the study of culture and intercultural theory and behavior that addresses various forms of intercultural communication. This is an intensive writing course

Historical Studies (HIS425) – This senior course examines how the study of history has developed, with particular emphasis on competing historical theories. Using examples of historical writing by representative historians across time, students will try to understand the role of objectivity and experimentation in manipulating the past in order to influence the future. Additionally, they examine how technology has affected the industry. The material studied covers historical European and American thought and practice. This is an intensive writing course.
The Dawn of Humanity: Civilizations Emerge and Grow (HIS303) – This course examines the birth and spread of world civilizations from the beginning of recorded history to 1350 AD. First, the course begins with a study of the development of early civilizations, then follows their development through the classical era by studying the Mediterranean societies of Greece and Rome, the Indian subcontinent, China, and the Persian Empire. Finally, the course concludes with the establishment of post-classical empires and the spread of world religions. Over time, technology and human agency led to regular encounters between distant communities. This course shows how the modern world is being shaped. This is an intensive writing course.
