The option to extend the calendar is Dr. Wendi Miller-Tomlinson, Superintendent for Teaching, Learning, Leadership and Research.
Option A would have sent students back to school on August 5, 2021 and added 10 more instructional days. This would add 30 minutes to the school day for elementary students, which equates to 25 non-extended school days.
Option C is an option that does not make any changes to the calendar. The 2021-2022 academic year begins on August 9 and ends on May 25.

Miller-Tomlinson told the board that public requests are being made by email and through personal statements given to the board in a legal notice published on Friday, April 16. Three people — two teachers and a parent — are giving private public participation. The teachers supported any changes, while the parents supported extending the school year.
According to district officials, more than 230 people have sent responses to the district via email. Option A had the support of 61 respondents and 25 respondents chose Option B. Some asked not to make changes to the calendar, some responses suggested that the district consider an annual calendar. Other responses showed no preference for either option. Many of the emails requested that the district keep the current calendar without an extension.

Respondents included 73 teachers, 126 parents and 13 people who identified themselves as teachers and parents. Others said they were community members.

Miller-Tomlinson said a common recommendation among parents who provided feedback suggested that the district focus on improving or providing opportunities for students who need additional academic support.

"This year is not normal," Miller-Tomlinson said. "Instead of talking about the loss of education, it is precisely teaching and learning that is not enough, which is usually at the end of the school year."
Committee members expressed concern about the burden on teachers, students and parents of extending the rigorous school year. Many responses came from constituents who did not support any additions to the current calendar.

The classes are small for good interaction between students and teachers, and the learning materials are new and useful for students and teachers.

A good education encourages students' curiosity, imagination and desire to learn. We must ensure that our schools nurture these values and continue to grow the innovators, thinkers, artists and leaders of tomorrow.
As teachers and members of LCPS, we set high expectations for all students and understand that no bubble test can measure students' curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
