Hawaiian Moon Calendar 2023 Kamehameha Publishing
Hawaiian Moon Calendar 2023 Kamehameha Publishing – Huli Mahina is a teaching tool that supports the use of the Hawaiian Lunar Calendar to guide today's fishermen, farmers and those interested.
Traditionally, Hawaiians used a calendar based on the phases of the moon called Kana Mahina. The traditional Hawaiian lunar year consisted of twelve malama (Hawaiian lunar months). Each Malama consisted of the 30 pō mahina (moon phases) cycle. Every three to six years, the thirteenth lunar month was added to ensure that Malama matched the correct environmental indicators throughout the season. Each month began with the new moon, Hilo and ended with Muku, the dark moon. Like the Gregorian month, the Hawaiian Malama is divided into 3 Anahulu. There are 10 moon phases in each Anahulu. Anahulu Hoʻonui is the first Anahulu of all Malama. Hoʻonui means grow more, the moon grows under this Anahulu.

The other Anahulu is Anahulu Poepoe. Poepoe means round or circular, the moon is in its full phases during this Anahulu. The moon rises at the beginning of the Anahulu poem and disappears at the end.

Anahulu Hoēmi is the third Anahulu. Hoʻēmi means reduction or reduction. The moon wanes during this anahulu until it reaches the new moon.

Each moon phase tile has 2 squares in the lower left. The upper square represents fishing and the lower square represents planting. When you look at the tiles from the Huli Mahina (after assembly), the color you choose for each square is visible through the fish or calo window. Here is our recommended color scheme for the fish and planting areas:

Here is an example of the Muku tile. We have colored the top (fishing) square blue to show that this pō mahina is a good step for fishing. We also colored the root location (planting) red to show that planting is not a good moon phase.
7) Place stack 1 (tiles 1 – 16) in the upper half of the box and stack 2 (tiles 29-14) in the lower half.
