While Georgetown County students can expect another vacation, they face an early return to school as the county prepares its school calendar for the next two years.

GEORGETOWN — Georgetown students may be looking forward to more vacations in the future, but due to changes to the district's school calendar over the next two years, they are starting school early.

Chelice Waites, the district's director of human resources, told the school board at its Jan. 18 meeting that a review of the board's calendar found other schools in South Carolina are moving to the annual program and want to follow suit.

The updated calendar still allows for an eight-week summer vacation and still requires students to complete 180 school days, but those days will be spread throughout the year.

The main difference between the two calendars is that students do not have weekly holidays. Most students have one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and one week for spring break.

Students have one week off in October, November and April, in addition to the usual two weeks at Christmas in the annual adjustment.

For the 2023-24 school year, faculty will return on July 26 and students will return on August 2. The last day of term is December 20th and the academic year letter is May 24th.

This school year, teachers return on August 11th and students begin on August 18th. The first semester traditionally ends after the Christmas holidays in mid-January. School ends on June 3rd.

To transition into the new era, the district is planning an extended 2022-23 school year that will be similar to the old calendar, but teachers and students will learn to go to school earlier than usual.

Teachers will begin the next academic year on August 1st and students will return to school on August 8th. The last day of the semester is December 16, 2022, not this year, which ended on January 13.

"I like the idea of ​​the semester ending in December," school board member Bill Gaskins said of the changes. "If that time is to be shortened, it will be time for students to come back and start the second semester."

Waites said one of the committee's goals is to have the classes completed before Memorial Day next year.

The new calendar will go to district staff and the public for comment and is expected to be read for the first time at the Feb. 1 school board meeting.
