We have done your homework for you! Our planting tool is tailored to your zip code. It pulls from a database of thousands of weather station reports and uses "days to harvest" for the most popular vegetables grown in the home garden. We then decide when to sow indoors, transplant and sow outside based on what works best for each vegetable. (Note: Our table has taken into consideration the most common harvest dates for each plant variety. However, the seed packet will tell you the exact days they will ripen for the variety you are growing. As for the dates of spring planting, you can always calculate planting dates yourself with our Frost Date Calculator.)
However, it is a little more complicated for the autumn harvest because you have to harvest a lot of vegetables before the winter frosts. The autumn sowing dates take into account that the crops are more durable or weaker, and we have also made changes to the harvest period. (If you find that the vegetables or fruits you want to grow don't give you enough harvest days in the fall, you may be able to find a specialty variety with a shorter growing season!)
: Frost dates are based on 30-year averages, so they are only indicative of what is "typical". Every year can be different. Each garden can also have a so-called "microclimate" (for example, an area in a valley or in a mountain) that is different. You should use your best judgment and this guide as a good starting point.
