Gary Larson was born on August 14, 1950 in Tacoma, Washington. He and his older brother always had an affinity for nature and spent much of their childhood exploring the forests and swamps of the Pacific Northwest and the tides and waters of Puget Sound.

Although he enjoyed drawing as a child, Larson did not formally study art, nor did he intend to become a cartoonist. He graduated from Washington State University in 1972 with a degree in communications, but took several science courses. In 1990, Larson received the Regents' Distinguished Alumnus Award and was the centennial speaker. His lecture was called "The Meaning of Weirdness." His interest in science was a common theme in many of the The Far Side® cartoons he produced over a fifteen-year period from January 1, 1980 to January 1, 1995.

Larson's work on The Far Side® has won him numerous awards, including the National Cartoonist Society's Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1990 and 1994. The National Cartoonist Society also named Larson the Best Syndicate Cartoonist and the 1985 and 1994. 1988 1993 Far Side® received the Max and Moritz Award for Best International Comic Strip/Panel from the International Comic Strip.
In 1994, Larson debuted a twenty-two-minute version of his first animated feature, Gary Larson's Tales From The Far Side®, as a Halloween special on CBS, and it quickly became a cult hit. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1995 Annecy International Animation Festival in France. This film and its sequel, Gary Larson's Tales from the Far Side® II, were selected for several international film festivals, including Venice, Brussels and Telluride, and were broadcast in many foreign countries. Both are produced using traditional cel animation, fully inked and hand painted.

Music was also an important part of Larson's life. He started playing guitar at a young age, moved to banjo for a few years, and eventually returned to guitar. Since retiring from the daily paper, Larson has focused his creative energies on the guitar and his passion for jazz.
By the end of its run, The Far Side® appeared in nearly 2,000 newspapers. This in turn spawned twenty-three The Far Side® books, including sixteen collections, five anthologies, and two retrospectives, twenty-two of which appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. Over forty-one million books and seventy-nine million journals have been sold over the years, and The Far Side® has been translated into more than seventeen languages.
For inspiration, Larson often cites his family's "passive sense of humor" growing up, and how his older brother liked to scare him whenever he got the chance. He was also once quoted as saying, "You know those little snow globes you shake? I always thought my mind was like that. You know where you just shake it and see what comes out and shake it again. He attributes much of his success to the caffeine in the coffee he drinks daily.
