The cheers were overwhelming today as seniors received their diplomas in a ceremony that begins with a procession of students across campus and ends with a formal ceremony at Phelps Stadium.

In a specially designed ceremony, the graduates were honored in person following pandemic protocols. But social distancing did nothing to dampen spirits as family, friends and faculty members wished the students well with applause, cheers and big smiles.

Senior Class President Ursula Wise hosted family and friends. In her short speech, she talked about two pioneers who persevered in the face of adversity: Marie Curie and Dorothy Haight. "Ask yourself: Why do we admire those who do the hardest work? It's because navigating adversity requires respect and shows wisdom," Wise said in his "Choose to accept this as a gift that they're struggling with," he said, encouraging classmates.

"We're entering a global community that needs to address big challenges," Wise said. "Wars continue, racial injustice continues, and we leave an ever-growing scar on our land. … There will be more work to be done in the name of progress. And according to Marie Curie, it will not be quick or easy."

Wise continued, "When I look at my classmates, I can envision a future filled with Exonians who don't shy away from challenges, but rather pursue them. We already know that What it means to persevere, and we are determined to achieve the unthinkable. Regardless of the challenges we face. We meet."

Principal Rawson '71 said, "I'm proud of what you've accomplished and the contributions you've made to our school during your time here — and you should, too"; In his speech to graduating seniors, P'08.

Rawson cited the many achievements of seniors in academics and competition, the arts, athletics, non-individual activities and anti-racist work. "You worked hard in all your endeavors, you gave it your all, you wanted perfection and you got it."

He continued: "Now more than ever, the world needs you to do our best to meet the greatest challenges of our time and build a more environmentally, economically and socially just and sustainable society. Give it a go and make a difference."

Bathed in sunlight on a perfectly clear day, the elders listened intently as Rawson finished his speech. "As we move with confidence, let us also move with humility—the humility to realize that we are doing our best while being open to the ideas and opinions of others, especially those who experiences and perspectives different from our own. The greatest challenges facing the world will be solved by teams, not individuals. Our Harkness pedagogy uniquely prepares you to be a member and leader of those teams."

Rawson was assisted on stage by trustees Deidre Auburn '84, Dean of Faculty Alan Wolfe, and students Evelyn Houston and Maggie Wainwright.

The principal thanked the retiring teachers who sat at the podium, including the 2020 and 2021 retirees: Richard Erwinen, Zetai Chen, Michael Gole, Hobart Harde, Connie Morris, Sarah Ream, Peter Schultz and Carrie Wendel. Not seated on stage are retired faculty members Jane Chase Farnum, Xuming Feng, Gail Scanlon, Amy Schwartz and Lee Young.

In honor of the co-ed's 50th anniversary, Rawson was joined by Beth Brownell Lee '71, the first girl to receive a degree on stage.
