FORT WORTH, Texas – The Fort Worth Independent School District's new superintendent is quickly gaining the respect and support of educators, parents and students across the district.
Dr Angelica Ramsey is not the kind of leader who sits behind a desk to run the district. Ramsey has attended so many schools since he got his new job that he has to keep track of his class schedule to keep count.

Now Ramsey can see firsthand what's going on at Clifford Davis Elementary School in Fort Worth. One focus is on raising the bar for math learning. It's all part of a plan to increase efficiency.
Clifford Davis Elementary is one of the underperforming Fort Worth ISD schools on a Ramsey supported mission.
"I'm not as concerned about test scores, I'm more concerned about what and how our students are learning," Ramsey said.

Ramsey aims to meet with as many principals, teachers, school staff, parents and students as possible each week.
His schedule is not only full of school visits, but also extends beyond school. Ramsey can also be seen at after-school district events such as after-school programs, weekend sporting events, and student-centered events.
"So I spend two days a week outside of school because staying connected is really important to me. "I always wear a teacher's hat and I'm in the classroom to see what our teachers are doing every day to see the students," he said. Ramsay. "Our teachers, our support staff, our principals, they can have frank conversations with me."

Key also showed charts of Ramsay's progress posted in the hallways. Key uses charts to help you see how schools are trying to improve.
It's also their way of being transparent with staff, parents and even students. Color-coding the charts helps students learn and see their progress towards success.
"It's almost like a road map," Key said. "So you will see where we start and then we will see where we end. And that's part of the measurement."

The average math score for Texas students in 2022 was 239, compared to the 2019 average of 244, according to the national report released Monday.
The percentage of Texas students who were at or above the baseline level was 78% in 2022, up from 84% in 2019.
The national mean in math falls with the biggest falls on record. In fact, according to the Nation's Report, not a single major urban school district in the United States saw improvement in math, period.

The report also pointed to test scores for students of color suffering the most, an expected post-pandemic challenge for Ramsey.
Ramsey said, "There's nothing we don't know about because it, in turn, has only made society's problems worse."
Ramsey is interested in learning from her principals what they need from her as superintendent to improve their campus.

Key is a sophomore at Clifford Davies Primary School and never expected such a visit from the principal.
"My job is to support our teachers and remove barriers, make sure our teachers have everything they need and make sure they're well funded, that schools have the staff they need," he said. Ramsay. "My role is, even my role, to listen to our teachers and ask them what do you need from us to be successful?
Going to school is nothing new to Ramsay. During his final week in his former district, Ramsey visited his campus up until his final days before joining FWISD. According to a press release, the approved schedule begins training on August 10 and ends on May 25 before Memorial Day. It provides for nine weeks of summer vacation for teachers and ten and a half weeks for students.
The timetable provides five days for staff development before school starts and 4 ½ days for staff development during the school year.
The holiday structure remains traditional, with one week Thanksgiving Day, two weeks Winter Holidays and one week Spring Holidays. Spring break will coincide with most of the area's school districts.

To meet Texas Education Agency requirements, 175 days of student instruction and 187 contract days for teachers with a minimum of 75,600 working minutes are expected.
In the event of a weather-related school dropout, the schedule calls for 1,185 additional working minutes, more than the minimum TEA requirement of 840 minutes. February 20th and April 10th serve as additional weather days.

Fort Worth Isd Is Now A B Rated District. How Does It Keep Up Its Progress?
Students will return to school on August 15, but the next Superintendent's Day at Fort Worth ISD will not be until early September.
The new trustees weighed the pros and cons of the six candidates, whom they interviewed in person at Cantey Hanger Plaza August 4-6. This group may or may not contain its nearest leader. The school board is trying to replace outgoing Superintendent Kent Scribner, who is leaving the post after seven years.
Attorney Brian Newby is advising the Trustees in their investigation. The school board is in something of a maintenance period as each trustee considers who should lead the district of about 73,000 students and builds consensus behind a candidate.

"You can narrow that down or ask for six more," Newby told the Fort Worth Report. "We will not be informed until they have completed their assessment. There is no time limit on how long they last."
Newby did not disclose the total number of applicants for the position, nor did he provide a breakdown by applicants' gender or whether they were from Texas or another state. He cited a law that doesn't require school districts to release information about candidates for superintendent.
School Board President Toby Jackson referred questions about the study to Newby, who he said the board has agreed to handle public comments about the process.

Illinois-based Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates is conducting the search for the chief. In an attempt to conduct the search, the firm told trustees it could have a new superintendent by August 15, the first day of school.
"That may or may not be the case," he said. "It just depends on the council's assessment of the candidates they have and whether there is a need to interview more candidates or whether they are unwilling to back down from the six."
Key to the start of the next Superintendent is the day the Trustees decide to announce their only finalist and officially take action against them.

Newby expects Trustees to nominate a single finalist for Superintendent. The school board has no plans to announce any candidates other than their choice for superintendent. Texas law allows school districts to withhold the names of superintendent candidates.
When the board announces its finalist, that person will not immediately take the reins of the district. State law requires superintendent finalists to wait 21 days before being officially hired.
The Trustees have two meetings scheduled for August. The next regular school board meeting will be on August 23rd. If the trustees agree on the selection of a superintendent, that person would not begin until September 13th. . if
