"While we are prepared to resume in-person classes this fall, we are taking an important step to manage the spread of community infection by significantly reducing the number of students on campus in late November and December." Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor. Beryl C. McEwen, for services to education. "As the nation's largest historically black university, we appreciate the unique challenges of protecting our large student body and will work throughout the summer to ensure our readiness."

Intelligent.com named North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University a 2023 Best Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in North Carolina. Intelligent.com also owns the A&T number.
Brenda Caldwell, student body president at North Carolina A&T State University, said she wanted to attend the HBCU because of its "work culture," which she believes will help the university fight the pandemic.

North Carolina A&T State University is the largest historically black college or university, or HBCU. With 12,000 students, it's average for the UNC system, but has the lowest rate of COVID-19 of any public university in the state.

"I think HBCUs in general have a family culture," said Brenda Caldwell, North Carolina A&T student body president. When it comes to COVID, we want to keep each other and our communities safe, especially when we know this disease affects black and brown people equally. "

Caldwell's parents also attended A&T. His father was the director of a music group, and his mother taught there. Wearing an Aggie Bird sweater and a blue and gold face mask, she sat in a student lounge decorated in the same school colors.
He knew that North Carolina HBCUs had lower-than-average rates of COVID-19. North Carolina A&T has 63 student jobs and no teams yet. By comparison, Western Carolina University has about 500 fewer students and more than twice as many positive students, and the UNC system ranks in the middle of the list of schools for the number of students with COVID-19.

Many students at HBCUs are first-generation students and value their education, Caldwell said.
"I think a lot of us don't even consider the possibility of going to college," Caldwell said. "Most students, especially freshmen, don't want to mess up."

The university has taken all measures. They reduced dorm capacity by a quarter, enrolled a third of students in all online classes, signed signs to promote social distancing, distributed masks and introduced testing.

When universities reopened on August 1, the student health center tested 2,000 students. This week, they encourage every student to get tested, just like they do during flu season.

"If you take at least one class on campus or come to campus as faculty and staff, we will test them," said Dr. Olanda Nicholson, Director of Education and Health. In the Student Health Center.
The federal government recently distributed COVID-19 rapid response tests to HBCUs. Nicholson said North Carolina A&T's latest 9,000 tests made this new testing initiative possible — a way everyone can test without the university's rapid-response tests, but it will take some time.

"Now we have everything and we can really go ahead and put it all on the screen," Nicholson said.

The UNC system does not have a standardized system for reporting COVID-19 data, but the analysis shows that A&T tested more per student than most other system schools.
Novel Coronavirus (covid 19)
The study also found that UNC students attending non-HBCUs were twice as likely to test positive for COBCID-19 than students attending in-state HBCUs.

Caldwell, the student body president, said HBCU students take their responsibility to help seriously. He had no symptoms, but had been tested on and off campus five times since the start of the school year.
"My friends and I are constantly testing because we often send screenshots of our negative tests, so if we collect, we know we're safe and we'll keep our masks. We are still maintaining social distancing. Caldwell said.

A&T also produces social media videos to promote testing. In the video, students dance with cotton in their hands. Many of them wore Greek letters to show their kinship or bloodline.
Leah Tyson is president of the A&T chapter of historically black Alpha Kappa Alpha. He said the number of tests on campus has increased since the video was released.

"I think people are really looking up to us," Tyson said. "And even though we're more than just the gender letters we wear or the fraternity letters we wear, it's important that they see … we know it's our responsibility to keep us on campus and keep us safe."

Summary: NCA&T has a multi-generational student body, a campus culture, mass enrollment measures, and a testing system that supports federal inventory. But Leah Tyson thinks she has something else to encourage students to be more careful about.

"Really, I believe the number one factor is the difference that COVID is making in the black community," Tyson said.
"Just looking at the number of A&T students or students or faculty and saying 'I'm missing someone' or 'My mom is positive for COVID' is like tweeting 'pray,'" Tyson said. "The closer it is to home, the more it means. This pandemic has deeply affected the people close to me and the people at my school, especially the people I feel like my family, even though I've never even been in the same class. "

Although more cases will be seen as testing increases, students Leah Tyson and Brenda Caldwell say the goal is for A&T families to finish together.
